| Cascade Cruiser Displayed At San Francisco International Auto Show | |||||||
| Between Nov. 19 and Nov. 26 over 5,000 people stopped
by the Solar Motions booth for a first hand look at the Cascade Cruiser.
On display was the Cascade Cruiser, a photo album from the 1999 World Solar
Challenge, and video clips from races in Japan and Australia. Solar Motions
team members were also on-hand to answer questions from the public and talk
about their experiences building and racing the car. The Solar Motions display was popular among both adults and children alike. Many were impressed that the car can run at highway speeds on the power of a hair dryer. This is possible because of the car’s wing-like shape, which has about 1/15 of the drag of a typical sedan. While pure solar cars like the Cascade Cruiser will never be practical, many of the technologies used may yet find a place in mainstream cars. Technologies such as wheel-motors, solar panels, regenerative breaks, improved batteries, light-weight composite materials, and aerodynamic body shapes may someday be used in electric, fuel cell, or hybrid-electric vehicles. With turn out so enthusiastic, the Solar Motions team has decided to have a public driving of the Cascade Cruiser early in 2001. Watch their web-site, www.solarmotions.com, for more details. |
